Nitrate contamination of urban groundwater and heavy rainfall: Observations from Dakar, Senegal

چکیده
In low-income urban areas of major cities in Africa, sanitation provision derives primarily from onsite systems often comprising septic tanks and pit latrines. Such rely upon the ability surrounding soil substratum to attenuate contaminants like nitrate pathogenic microorganisms wastewater. Here, we assess soil–water solute dynamics Quaternary aeolian sands underlying a densely populated suburb (Keur Massar) Dakar (Senegal) using high-frequency monitoring vadose zone modeling (Hydrus-1D). Observations rainfall intensity, moisture content, shallow groundwater-level fluctuations concentrations were carried out at an experimental site adjacent tank supplied by toilets used primary school. Rapid rises content episodic recharge contributions observed groundwater levels caused heavy (>10 mm h−1) extreme (>20 are well modeled (R2 = .79–.83; RMSE 0.012–0.019) pore-matrix flow unsaturated Darcy–Richards equation. Spot sampling around most intense 2020 (45 reveals fivefold rise fall concentration (∼500 ∼2,500 mg L−1). These measurements provide new insight into hydrological which is grossly contaminated (>500 L−1) through flushing wastewater vast estimated network over 250,000 this Dakar.

Nitrate Contamination of Groundwater in Austria: Determinants and Indicators
Nitrogen is an important input to agricultural production but also detrimentally a ects the environmental quality of air, soil and water. Identifying the determinants of nitrate pollution and in turn de ning sensible performance indicators to design, enforce and monitor regulatory policies is therefore of utmost importance. Using data on more than 1000 Austrian municipalities, we provide a deta...
متن کاملAssessment of nitrate contamination of groundwater using lumped-parameter models
In this paper, lumped-parameter models (LPMs) were developed and utilized to simulate nitrate concentration in the groundwater of Gaza City and Jabalia Camp (GCJC) in the Gaza Coastal Aquifer (GCA) in Palestine. In the GCJC area, nitrate levels exceed the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L NO3-N (45 mg/L NO3) in many wells. Elevated nitrate concentrations in the groundwater of GCJC area...
متن کاملNitrate contamination of groundwater: A conceptual management framework
In many countries, public concern over the deterioration of groundwater quality from nitrate contamination has grown significantly in recent years. This concern has focused increasingly on anthropogenic sources as the potential cause of the problem. Evidence indicates that the nitrate (NO3) levels routinely exceed the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/l NO3-N in many aquifer systems that...
متن کاملNitrate Contamination of Groundwater under Irrigated Coastal Plain Soils
To develop best management practices (BMP) for agricultural land to protect groundwater, data is needed on the leaching of N from irrigated coastal plain soils treated with poultry manure. This study was conducted to determine the vertical and seasonal patterns of NO3 leaching under such soils. Four commercially farmed corn (Zea mays L.) fields were studied, two receiving only fertilizer N (240...
متن کاملAgriculture's Contribution to Nitrate Contamination of Californian Groundwater (1945-2005).
Nitrogen (N) use in intensive agriculture can degrade groundwater resources. However, considerable time lags between groundwater recharge and extraction complicate source attribution and remedial responses. We construct a historic N mass balance of two agricultural regions of California to understand trends and drivers of past and present N loading to groundwater (1945-2005). Changes in groundw...
